Comparison of Surface Quality of Ti5Al4V Alloys Grinded by Two Type of Grinding Wheels
-
Abstract
Dry grinding experiments for titanium alloy Ti5Al4V were carried out using SiC and CBN grinding wheels to study the surface micro-hardness, surface roughness and surface morphology of Ti alloy under three grinding depths (0.01, 0.03, 0.05 mm). Results show that with the increase of grinding depth, the surface morphology of the Ti5Al4V alloy grinded by SiC grinding wheel became worse, grinding burn and cracks appeared, the hardness of the subsurface decreased, and a softened layer appeared; while under the same grinding depth, the surface quality of the Ti5Al4V alloy grinded by CBN grinding wheel was superior to that by SiC grinding wheel, which was mainly attributed to CBN grinding wheel producing smaller grinding force and less heat in grinding.
