Abstract
The hot deformation behavior of 14% SiC particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites produced by stir casting was investigated with compression tests on a Gleeble-3500 simulator, and processing maps were developed using the principles of dynamic materials models. The tests were performed in temperature range of 300-450 ℃ and strain rate range of 0.001-1 s-1.The results indicated that steady-state flow characteristics existed during hot compression deformation of the composite under the test conditions, and the flow stresses decreased with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. When the strain rate reached 1 s-1,adiabatic temperature rise during testing was considerable and increased with increasing strain. The processing maps illustrate that the optimum working region was at the temperature range of 400-450 ℃ and strain rate range of 0.001-0.01 s-1.Two domains of unsafe regime were also identified.
