FEM Simulation of Side Impact Crashworthiness for Tailored Hot Formed Anti-Collision Door Beam

  • According to the position relations between the side door beam, door and occupant, as well as the mold modularity optimization design principle, through a reasonable arrangement of the strength gradient distribution in each part of tailored hot formed side door beam, an anti-collision beam with varied strtength was developed. LS-DYNA software and steels with tensile strength levels of 1 700 MPa and 2 200 MPa and TRIP600 were applied to simulate the side door beam strength test. The static side crashworthiness and safety performance of the side door beam with uniform distribution of mechanical properties and the tailored hot forming side door beam with gradient distribution of mechanical properties were compared. The results show that, for the identation amount-reactive force curves of matensite steel owing uniform properties, its FEM simulated results agreed well with the experimental ones, which proved the accuracy of simulation. Comparing with the beams owing uniform properties, the tailored hot formed side door beam has good static side crashworthiness and safety performance.
