Effects of Nd on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of AM60 Magnesium Alloy

  • The effects of the addition of Nd element to AM60 magnesium alloy on the microstructure,fractograph,mechanical properties were studied by means of OM,SEM,EDS and XRD.The results show that Nd refined the microstructure of AM60 alloy effectively,and decreased the amount and size of Mg17Al12 phase.Nd element took a priority to react with Al element over Mg,Mn and Zn,forming binary phase Al11Nd3 with high melting point.Certain amount of Nd increased the tensile strength,yield strength and elongation.With more addition,Nd would combine more Al in matrix and decrease the strengthening effect because Al11Nd3 phase would become coarsening.The mechanical poroerty tests indicate that AM60-0.9Nd alloy had the best properties.The maximum tensile strength,yield strength and elongation were 230 MPa,127 MPa and 14%,increased about 28%,48% and 1.8 times respectively,compared with those of AM60 alloy.
