Interfacial Reaction and Effect of SiCf/Ti-6Al-4V Composites

    • The interfacial reaction of Ti-6Al-4V composites reinforced with SiC fibers was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.Effect of interfacial reaction layer thickness on the interfacial shear strength and thermal residual stresses were analyzed by push-out test and finite element modeling respectively. The results indicate that the interfacial reaction of the SiCf/Ti-6Al-4V composites formed two layers of TiC,and one with larger grains located adjacently to the Ti-6Al-4V matrix and the other with finer grains closed to the carbon coating. With the increase of interfacial reaction layer thickness, the interfacial shear strength of the SiCf/Ti-6Al-4V composites increased. The radial thermal residual stress in the fiber and interfacial reaction layer increased slightly, and the hoop thermal residual stress in the interfacial reaction layer changed slightly.
