Effect of Mn Element on Thermal Stability and Mechanical Properties of Zr55Cu30Ni5Al10 Bulk Metallic Glass

    • The alloy rods in 3 mm diameter of (Zr0.55Al0.10Ni0.05Cu0.30)100-xMnx(x=0,2,4,6) were prepared by copper mold with suction casting method. Effects of Mn addition on the thermal stability, glass forming ability, mechanical properties and microstructure of Zr55Cu30Ni5Al10 bulk metallic glass were investigated. Results show that appropriate Mn addition can decrease the thermal stability and glass forming ability of the alloys. The bulk metallic glass with x=4 exhibited a supercooled liquid region ΔTx of 61 K, reduced glass transition temperature Trg of 0.58 and parameter γ of 0.40. Appropriate Mn addition also can enhance the compressive strength to 1 817 MPa for the bulk metallic glass with x=4, but has no obvious improvement in compressive plasticity.
