Cutting Performance of PCD Tool during High Speed Milling of TA15 Titanium Alloy

    • High speed milling contrast tests were performed on the TA15 titanium alloy using polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tool and carbide tool. The cutting performance of PCD tool during milling of TA15 titanium alloy was evaluated from tool wear, cutting force and cutting temperature. The results show that the PCD tool during milling had good cutting performance, whose tool life was up to 145 min and stable cutting time was 121 min which improved 4 times than that of the carbide tool. The wear morphology of the PCD tool was uneven wear on rear face, partial peeling on rake face and micro-tipping around the tool nose. With the increase of cutting speed, the cutting force along the x axial direction decreased slightly. The larger the feed per tooth and cutting depth along the axial direction, the greater the cutting force along x axial direction. With the increase of cutting speed and the radial cutting depth, the cutting temperature increased.
