Microstructure and Properties of TiC/Fe Matrix Composite Produced In-situ

    • TiC/Fe matrix composite was in situ synthesized by sintering compacts of mixed ferrochromium, ferromolybdenum, iron, titanium and carbon black powders. The microstructure of the composite was investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the synthesized composite consisted of fine TiC particles and α-Fe as the binder phases when no vanadium was added. With the addition of vanadium, the composite consiste of (Ti,V)C particles and α-Fe,and the densification and bending strength of (Ti,V)C/Fe composite are higher than those of the TiC/Fe composite.Compared with TiC,the face spaces of (Ti,V)C were lower than those of TiC,(Ti,V)C particles exhibited finer size and more homogeneous distribution in the matrix, and their shape is round.
