Preparation and Properties of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Copper Matrix Composite

    • Chromium coating was prepared on carbon fiber surface by magnetron sputtering, the purpose is to improve the wettability between carbon fibre and copper matrix; and then under the conditions of 1 200 ℃ and vacuum degree of 4×10-1Pa, the carbon fiber reinforced copper matrix composite was fabricated by copper infiltrating in carbon fibre for 2 h. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the composite were studied by scanning electron microscopy and hardness testing, and its electrical conductivity was tested also. The results show that the chromium coating with thickness of 400-500 nm was obtained when sputtering power was 50 W, sputtering time was 40 min, pressure was 2.0 Pa and argon flow rate was 20 mL·min-1. The chromium coatings, combining well with matrix, exhibited bright appearance without black-core phenomenon. The composite owned clear interface between carbon fibre and copper matrix, and it owned the properties as following: axial electrical conductivity of 83%IACS, hardness of 56.3 HB and calculated tensile strength of 303.457-404.768 MPa.
